A Historical Performance:  Old pianos and New Musicianship

David Kim will present a lecture demonstration about 19th-century Viennese pianos—the kind that were familiar to Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann—illustrating how these historical instruments can point the way forward to a new attitude towards music making. He will perform on a fortepiano and on a piano.

Kim holds degrees from Harvard, Yale, and Cornell Universities, and a doctorate from the New England Conservatory of Music. He has performed internationally, and his concerts have been praised as “emotionally expansive” and “idiomatically perfect.” After a 2013 performance in Maine, Camilla Cai wrote that “his interpretations are spectacular.”
